Microsoft Intune

Intune is Microsoft’s cloud-based solution for managing devices, apps, and compliance.

What is Microsoft Intune?

Microsoft Intune is a cloud-based solution for managing and securing mobile devices (laptops, tablets, smartphones) and applications within an organization, enabling IT departments to enforce policies and protect company data, even on personal devices (BYOD). It enables you to deploy apps, configure devices for compliance, and wipe data from lost devices, and it integrates seamlessly with other Microsoft 365 services.

Microsoft Intune Features

Microsoft Intune provides organizations with a single, centralized cloud platform to keep all workstations—laptops, tablets, smartphones, and virtual endpoints—secure, up-to-date, and manageable. The platform supports any modern workplace strategy— from hybrid work to BYOD—and makes it easy for IT to enforce policies, keep devices compliant, and protect business data.

With Intune, you can manage devices and apps across different operating systems, centrally deploy configurations and updates, and protect data with app policies—even without having to fully enroll a device. Integrations with Microsoft Entra and Microsoft Defender, among others, strengthen security and ensure consistent, secure access to corporate resources.

Intune thus helps organizations manage more efficiently, mitigate risks, and create a flexible yet fully secure digital work environment—exactly what’s needed for today’s modern workplace.

Benefits

  • Device Management (MDM) - Centrally manage all devices in your organization, configure settings (Wi-Fi, VPN), and install updates.
  • Mobile Application Management (MAM) — Manage the apps employees use and control how they access and share company data, without taking full control of the device.
  • Security & Compliance - Enforce security policies, use conditional access, and ensure that devices comply with the organization's standards before they are granted access to data.
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) - Keep personal and business data separate on a device, and delete only business data in the event of loss or termination of employment.
  • Cloud-native - Fully cloud-based, eliminating the need for an on-premises server environment for management.

Applications

Microsoft Intune offers organizations a powerful way to manage modern workplaces securely and efficiently. The platform is widely used for BYOD scenarios, allowing employees to safely use their own devices without putting company data at risk. In addition, Intune helps secure entire work environments by enabling IT teams to easily enforce policies, maintain device compliance, and roll out business applications in a controlled manner. This creates a flexible yet highly secure digital work environment that supports hybrid work.

Integrations

Intune’s full potential is realized through its seamless integrations with other Microsoft solutions. Microsoft Entra centrally manages identity and access, ensuring that only secure and verified users can access apps and data. The integration with Microsoft Defender strengthens security by combining threat detection and device protection. Finally, Intune integrates perfectly with Microsoft 365, bringing together management, security, and productivity seamlessly within a single, centralized platform.

How does Microsoft Intune compare to the Intune Suite?

Microsoft Intune forms the foundation of modern endpoint management: managing devices, applications, compliance policies, and security in a single, centralized cloud solution.

The Intune Suite builds on this and consists of a bundle of advanced add-ons that provide additional functionality for organizations that need greater security, visibility, and automation. These include solutions such as Remote Help, Advanced Analytics, Endpoint Privilege Management (EPM), Enterprise Application Management (EAM), and Cloud PKI. These extensions offer deeper security, faster support, and greater automation within the modern workplace.

Important to know: Microsoft has announced that many of these Intune Suite capabilities will be available within Microsoft 365 E3 and E5 licenses, giving organizations access—at no additional cost—to features that were previously only included in the Suite.

In short:

  • Microsoft Intune = the foundation for endpoint management and security.
  • Intune Suite = premium extensions on top of Intune, for organizations that want more automation, support, and security.
  • M365 E3/E5 = includes an increasing number of Intune Suite features, making advanced endpoint management more accessible than ever.

Want to know more?

Traditional security solutions provide protection by isolating an IT environment from the outside world, for example, using firewalls and VPN tunnels. But the days when this was considered effective security are now over; this approach is no longer sufficient in a cloud-based world. This is because the cloud is accessible 24/7 via the public internet. Your data must therefore be protected at all times, even outside the walls of your organization.

In this white paper, you’ll learn:

  • Why is traditional security no longer sufficient today?
  • How should you secure your cloud environment, and what security layers are involved?
  • What does “assume breach” mean? And why should you adjust your security strategy accordingly?
  • Why is the "protect-detect-respond" principle so important for a cloud security strategy?
  • What should you consider when deciding between “doing it yourself” and “outsourcing”?
